Landfilled
Community conversations about recycling

Project background

How do citizens' values and interests affect their participation in recycling programs? Are they concerned about the life spans of local landfills?

These are questions that the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Solid Waste Management District set out to answer with the help of One KC Voice. OKCV designed and facilitated a series of nearly 35 community conversations and workshops to find the answers.

Phase I: Community discussions

A total of 23 discussions were held throughout the Kansas City region.

Phase II: Workshops

Five workshops brought together citizens to prioritize how recycling programs can be redesigned to better fit citizens' values and lifestyles.

Phase III: Final report

A final report was written for the SWMD that details strategies that more than 700 participants said would increase their participation in waste-reduction programs. The report has helped the MARC Solid Waste Management District and its members design programs that aim to increase participation by incorporating more effective education and communication strategies and use citizen ideas to lower barriers to participation.

Landfilled-Wyandotte County engagement series

Landfilled-WyCo logoOne KC Voice also convened a series of six discussions, which were supported by funding from the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., with Wyandotte County citizens.

The feedback from the discussions was given to Solid Waste Management Committee to help it develop its new curbside recycling program.
