What is civic engagement?

"We the people." These three words found in the preamble to the Constitution capture the essence of civic engagement. Civic engagement seeks to connect "we the people" with the governments and institutions we created.

There are different levels of civic enagagement. Here's how we break it down:

Level 1: Two-way communication

  • Enhances exchanges between elected representatives and the people they represent
  • Provides opportunities for real, meaningful contributions by people who are most affected by an issue

Level 2: Collaboration

  • Brings people together to resolve common problems, plan for the future and overcome challenges
  • Fosters a rebirth of ideas and initiatives for communities and society
